Punjab Government vows to revive student unions

The minister of higher education of the Punjab government, Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz has said that a bill for the restoration of student unions will be introduced in the Provincial Assembly soon and will be passed by the assembly.

The minister Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz, however, said that the student unions were banned because of their politicization. Therefore, he said, student unions could not be restored.

He was speaking to the media at the inauguration ceremony of the 13th IEEE International Conference on Open-Source Systems & Technologies (ICOSST 2019) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore.

He said, for this purpose, student government would be introduced in Punjab and a proposal was under consideration to restore student unions so that they could work for the betterment of students.

He said that for student government, a fund would be established, which would be spent on the welfare of students. “Our government wants to bring about a positive change in the lives of students,” the minister said adding that a guidance center would also be established this academic year. This guidance center would provide guidance to students on career counselling, scholarships and job placement, he said.
