An intercollegiate poster exhibition highlighting environmental issues has received a warm response from students and art lovers at the Government College University (GCU) Lahore. Vice Chancellor GCU Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi inaugurated the exhibition organized by the GC university’s Biological Society.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Zaidi said Government College University is formulating a policy to make its campus environment friendly. Art is a very effective tool to reflect on environmental issues and transform society.

He said that they have banned the use of plastic bags on campus, and are now encouraging their students to use electric motorcycles.

VC GCU appreciated that students not only highlighted environmental issues like pollution, water scarcity, climate change, plastic waste, and threats to biodiversity, but they also tried to offer solutions through their posters.

The Vice Chancellor said the young artists in Pakistan have immense talent what they just are guidance and support from parents, teachers and educational institutions.

Students from different colleges and universities put on display a wide range of artworks ranging from pencil sketches to oil paintings and photography to digital artwork. As many as 30 posters were presented in the art exhibition at the GC university’s Abdus Salam Hall.

GCU Lahore recommends increase in remunerations & allowances

The Finance and Planning Committee of Government College University Lahore (GCU) has recommended an increase in extra-duty and overtime remuneration for the non-gazetted staff besides a special allowance at the rate of 25 percent for the employees of BPS 1-19.

The 30th meeting of the committee was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi while Finance Department Deputy Secretary Muhammad Arif Khan Naizi, GCU Dean Prof. Dr. Raiz Ahmad, and Economics Department Chairperson Prof. Dr. Babar Aziz were also present. GCU Treasurer Abid Shahzad Aslam presented the agenda.

The committee also approved the “GCU Best University Teacher Award Policy” and performance-based increments for its TTS faculty.

The Finance and Planning Committee also increased per lecture remuneration for the visiting faculty besides giving its consent for the adoption of the Higher Education Commission’s Revenue Enhancement and Fund Generation Policy.

The committee recommended the creation of academic and administrative posts at the University’s new departments besides financial incentives for employees shifted to the new campus of GCU in KSK.

It also gave consent for an increase in the integrated allowance for class IV employees of the university.

The committee acknowledged and appreciated the efforts made by the Vice-Chancellor and its financial team for ensuring transparency of funds and providing financial incentives to the University’s employees.

The recommendation of F&P would be placed before the Syndicate for approval.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Selection Board was also held here at GCU Lahore Syndicate Committee Room with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi in the chair. Home Economics University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen and other members of the board were also present.

The Board recommended the promotion of six staff members in BPS-17 and the appointment of Prof. Dr. Babar Aziz as TTS Professor. It also recommended the promotion of Dr. Sabahat Zahra of Chemistry Department as Associate Professor and Tahir Bashir as the Additional Registrar.

The recommendation of the Selection Board would also be placed before the Syndicate for approval.

GCU to Establish Kashmir Centre of Excellence

The Government will establish the Kashmir Centre of Excellence in order to effectively highlight the Kashmir issues, said Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi while speaking to Sardar Masood Khan, the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in a meeting at the Jammu and Kashmir House.

Prof. Zaidi said that the Kashmir Centre of Excellence would help create opportunities for the students and faculty members to fully understand the various dimensions of the Kashmir dispute and also produce academic discourses on this issue.

The Vice Chancellor also apprised the President that GCU has a very vibrant and active student society which has earned praise from all over Pakistan. He added that various societies like the debating, culture, arts and performance societies will work in tandem with the Kashmir society to produce plays, songs and also hold debating competitions on Kashmir issue.

Talking to Prof. Zaidi, the President Azad Jammu and Kashmir, said that our future generation studying in higher education institutions should be trained in new technologies and prepared to face the challenges of the evolving job market. “Only then will our youth be able to take Pakistan on the path to success and prosperity,” he said.

President Masood Khan greatly appreciated the initiatives of the GCU management in highlighting the Kashmir issue. He said that being the oldest alma mater in the subcontinent, their efforts would act as a huge catalyst in raising the Kashmir issue both in Pakistan and the world.

The President said that GCU can be instrumental in organizing national and international conferences on the Kashmir dispute

The President while inviting the VC to visit Muzaffarabad, said that AJK has five public sector universities and groundwork can be prepared for student and faculty exchange programmes in order to enhance mutual linkages, create an atmosphere of learning and focus on capacity building.

Prof. Dr. Asghar also invited the President to address the students and faculty at GCU on Kashmir affairs. He said that this interaction would help provide them with critical information on the nature of the dispute and the on-going human rights violations taking place in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

GCU Holds Webinar On Coronavirus Vaccine and Related Myths

LAHORE: A webinar on “Coronavirus vaccine and myths related to it” was held at the Government College University Lahore under the auspices of its Disease Awareness and Prevention Society.

The two-hour webinar, addressed by the renowned infectious diseases and internal medicine expert  Dr. Faheem Younus and Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi aimed at diminishing misconceptions regarding the coronavirus and its vaccines.

The medicine expert provided updated and authentic information to the university students regarding its future prospects in Pakistan.

Addressing the webinar via zoom Dr. Younus said that two successful RNA-based vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) would be soon available in the global biotech market for all countries and explained their mode of operation.

He added that these vaccines identify the spike proteins and then synthesize mRNA products, which after giving signals to the body, self-destructs and dissolves in the system.

With this exploratory analysis, Dr. Younas tried to bust the myth of lasting side effects.  He expressed Pakistan would be able to prioritize and systematically distribute the vaccine, upon its reception, first among its front line workers, then among older people and finally the youth.

“Vaccines may cause minimal side effects in some people but would overall be beneficial,” Dr Younas said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi enlightened the participants and the fellow panellists about the importance of vaccines especially to the older people which have been the focal point of his research endeavours.

GCU VC also apprised the audience regarding the  initiatives by GCU Lahore in these difficult and demanding times to raise awareness about coronavirus and practically support the frontline health workers.

Christmas celebrations Held at GCU

LAHORE: The Government College University Lahore faculty, staff members and students celebrated Christmas with the university’s Christian community. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi and Guest of Honor Dr. Bishop Azad Marshall cut the Christmas cake with the university’s Christian staff and faculty members.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi said that GCU had always stood out for promoting tolerance and religious harmony. He hoped that the second wave of COVID-19 would be over soon and they would hold a bigger event with the families on Easter.

Bishop Azad Marshall said that all religions teach peace. He said Christmas was a time of delight, sharing the joys and sufferings of others, acceptance, forgiveness, reconciliation, celebrations and promoting love and peace.

Dr Peter John from the university’s Chemistry Department also spoke on the occasion.

The Christian community expressed gratitude and said that Christmas gave the message of peace and love to all humanity.

The Government College University Lahore (GCU) and University of Engineering & Technology Lahore (UET) joined hands for teaching and research collaboration in the fields of science, engineering, social sciences, humanities and language.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi and UET Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar signed the accord at a formal ceremony at the engineering university.
