8 surprising fun facts about UMT

What do you know about UMT? A private university with a liberal environment, right? Some think it has elite students having fun on the campus. Well, the reality is not the same. Talking to a few students, we have come to know a lot more about the campus environment. Here are a few fun facts that you will love to read about UMT.

  1. It is called the University of Management and Technology but it has nothing like good management

UMT takes pride in being one of the best institutes in technology and management degrees. But talking about its own management, students are not very happy about it. Some students say if they make a list of what makes UMT a good institute, management will come nowhere in that list.

  1. The waiters in the cafeteria need their tips before you pay the bill

Not sure about the education and the environment but the waiters of the UMT are unique. They will expect you to tip them before you pay your bill. In fact, they will be least interested in your order, in serving you or taking the bill. All they want is you to tip them. The sooner you do this, the better.

  1. On your birthday, you will get wished by the whole cafeteria

Do you like getting noticed when you have your birthday? The cafeteria of UMT is the best place for you. And if you are least interested in getting the limelight, never go to that café with your friends. This is because the students don’t care. They all will be wishing you and you might need to run.

  1. The slogan of UMT is ‘UMT my first choice’ but the reality is pretty much the opposite

‘UMT my first choice’ is the slogan of the institute that students make fun of the most. They think you will very rarely find a student who has UMT as their first choice. Mostly, students think they would be getting to this university if they don’t get admission anywhere else. So, the reality is exactly the opposite of this slogan.

  1. There is nothing like a chill university environment like other private universities

Like other private universities, UMT is also famous for being a chill place where there is always a party environment. But it is not at all so. You have to maintain 80 percent attendance and if you have missed one extra class, you do not need to come to the next class because your subject is dropped and you will have to repeat it now. There is very little time for the party.

  1. You will receive emails about the dress code at least twice a month

A chill elite environment where there are no restrictions is what people think of UMT. But what will you say after finding out that there is a dress code for students and staff? They are supposed to be following that reasonable dress code and the management is pretty serious about it. They receive emails twice a month about the dress code.

  1. UMT is obsessed with foreign qualified teachers

Being obsessed with foreign qualified teachers is not necessarily a bad thing. But UMT prioritizes them over any more experienced teacher who is qualified from the country. Mostly, teachers are young and with less experience but you know what, they are foreign qualified.

  1. You will find students playing all kinds of sports and activities in the small area it has

UMT has one ground and other open areas in front of the departments and buildings within the campus. It is not very vast. But students manage to do all kinds of activities there, particularly in the evening. You will find some of them playing cricket on the ground, others playing badminton at countless different few-inches locations, some chatting with friends, some having a jamming session on the same ground, and others playing ping pong at a distance. All of this happens within a small campus and you never find space to walk in the silence.

Over 28000 teachers from Punjab apply for transfers under the e-transfer policy

More than 28000 teachers from the government schools of Punjab have applied for transfers and postings to different areas. The applications have been submitted under the new e-transfer policy provided by the School Education Department (SED) Punjab.

The announcement of the opening of transfers through the e-transfer portal was made last month by the former Punjab government. It was meant to facilitate the government teachers from Punjab to be posted to the cities of their choice in a very quick and efficient way. After the announcement was made, the government reopened the portal for applications on March 31. It was supposed to remain open for almost two weeks since the deadline for the submission was the 13th of April. In just 13 days, there were around 28,500 applications.

Out of these, more than half were female applicants. The number of female teachers was around 16,000 while the number of male applicants was around 12,000. According to the details provided by the government, the School Education Department will review the application by the 23rd of April and the orders for postings and transfers will be issued by the 25th of the same month.

Since the former government has always mentioned the transparent functioning of the institutes, the school department is no exception. The e-transfer portal is made to make sure that the transfers happen strictly on the basis of merit and there is no involvement of any other factor in the selection of candidates.

The portal can be opened on mobile phones. Not just that, a mobile app for e-transfers was also launched by the previous government. The candidates can check the status of their applications through this portal opened either through the web or the app. The progress of the application can also be tracked through this. This was a very helpful and efficient measure taken by the former leadership. Candidates seem to be in need of transfers since tens of thousands have applied. Let’s see how far the current government keeps up with this initiative.

KPK govt. announces a digital training program for young women

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a digital training program for the women of the province. The program is supposed to equip around 3000 women in the province with advanced digital skills.

An official of the program while talking about its implications and need said, ‘the goal of the program is to empower 3000 women of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with skills, like graphic designing, WordPress design and development, content writing, blogging, social media marketing, and other digital tools for productivity, and to promote the financial independence of the women by providing them with employment opportunities through digital jobs.’

The information provided by the Department of Science and Information Technology says that Rs. 80 million have been allocated for the project. The minister of the Science and Technology Department, Atif Khan, said that they have to empower women economically and tangible measures are being taken for that. This step is one of them. He further explained that such measures will be followed by employment opportunities in science and technology through three special technology zones (STZs) that the provincial government will create. These three zones will be constructed in the districts of Haripur, Mardan, and Peshawar, he mentioned.

The initiatives to empower people in technology are not new. Last year, a budget of around 840 million rupees was spent to train around 25,000 people of KPK in the field of IT. This project for women is also an offshoot of that measure. It is supposed to equip women with enough skills to start their own projects and do businesses online.

American scholar on how Pakistan can compete in education on the global stage

“Education system in Pakistan is as unstable as the overall political and economic situation of the country. It is not necessarily underdeveloped or bad, it is just unstable and inconsistent,” said Adam Weinstein, an American scholar at Quincy Institute in an exclusive interview with Academia Magazine.

‘Pakistan has some of the best educational institutions in the world or the region, at least. But it has these wide gaps in education that need to be improved,’ he asserted while talking about his perspective on the education system of Pakistan.

He believes that private universities like LUMS and public universities like Quaid e Azam are as good as other universities in the world. Talking about them, he said he is impressed with the faculty and students of QAU.

However, he expressed his disappointment by stating that access to education in Pakistan is dependent upon the class you belong to. ‘Particularly, the pre-university education is inconsistent depending upon class and geography and this is where Pakistan is lagging behind the most’ he added.

The research scholar has a great interest in the foreign policy of Afghanistan and Pakistan. When asked about his research interests in Pakistan, he keenly responded, ‘Pak-US relations are dysfunctional and they have enough potential to make it interesting.’

Both of these nations without a doubt have a great potential for relations considering the history of co-dependency in security programs and multiple development programs. These relations, along with a strong foreign policy, can be affected greatly through the student exchanges that are currently happening and can be increased.

Currently, after the Taliban took over Afghanistan, the region also faced a great deal of instability. Pakistan had a huge influx of immigrants and many students from Afghanistan started taking admissions to Pakistani institutes. This is definitely a great step to accommodate these students, but does Pakistan have enough resources for that? Adam Weinstein stated that our government has not cared about it enough. He explained that Pakistan can take a lead from a human rights perspective to particularly supporting the education of Afghan girls who have been excluded from high school. ‘That’s a good opportunity for Pakistan to assert itself as a leader.’ he expressed.

Weinstein has also been a member of the American-Pakistan Foundation’s leadership, which he thinks is working effectively bridging the gap between the youth of both the countries by providing opportunities like fellowships and scholarship programs to Pakistani students.

Thousands of Pakistani students are currently studying in the US. Some are studying on scholarships and exchange programs and others are self-supporting their studies by working there. Weinstein spoke about the keen interest among Pakistani students to acquire higher education in the US. ‘There is immense potential in the exchange programs. Pakistani students go to the US and study at elite institutions and the American population is exposed to them in a way it has never been before.’

He smiled as he said, ‘You see the vlogging videos. Those do nothing. These exchanges do something.’ Moreover, he thinks that Pakistan needs to develop to increase these exchanges to Pakistan too.

He is of the view that the students from the US and Europe should also study in Pakistan.

Do we have enough resources or a good infrastructure to offer international students from countries like the US some exchange programs? Weinstein believes that this is indeed possible, and that Pakistan has a lot to offer to these students. ‘It can be a six months exchange. The students can study language, climate research, research related to irrigation, water tables, and other agriculture programs,’ he further added. “Pakistan is faced with issues like climate change, drought issues, irrigation, air quality, etc. It should be selling itself for these issues, he stated.

But does Pakistan have enough resources for an endeavor like this? “Funds for this can be generated by requesting investments from private investors or international bodies.”

When asked about the resources Weinstein said, ‘It does not have to be detrimental if you do it in a more intelligent way by seeking funding from the UK, US, UN, and the private philanthropists.’

This won’t be the first time a third world country will offer exchange programs to international students. India is an example of one such country.

The scholar raised the question as to why people are studying Urdu in Lucknow and not in Karachi or Lahore.

‘Pakistan needs to create conditions for academic exchanges and must take the lead. A lot of this doesn’t have to do anything with security but just with feeling organized’, he said.

The discussion moved to analyzing the education system and the drawbacks in it. ‘Pakistan needs to have consistent high-quality education at the lower level for the younger ages that isn’t class dependent and isn’t geography dependent,’ he commented.

According to him the biggest issue facing education in Pakistan is not in the education system itself, it is in the job market.

Pakistan is developing these educated youth who have master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and PhDs, and what is waiting for them when they graduate?”, he asked.

‘No society can remain healthy if they have an educated young population that has no prospects. That is a recipe for disaster, it is a recipe for political unrest, and it is a recipe for dissatisfaction’, Weinstein asserted.

What happens to the talented people who graduate with a high skill set but are not welcomed by the market because there are not enough avenues where they can apply their skills and earn? The result is brain drain which is what Pakistan is currently facing. The brightest people want to get out of this country. They go to get master’s degrees and never come back. Do they not like living in Pakistan? Talking about this issue Adam said, ‘This should be considered almost a national security crisis for Pakistan to have this kind of brain drain.’ He is of the view that the state should create incentives for youth emergently because there needs to be a payoff for education.

Another important concern to Pakistan is to earn a place in the global knowledge economy. But why is Pakistan lagging in the knowledge-based economy? Pakistani students either want to be bureaucrats or leave for another country where there are better prospects.

‘This situation is not good for business. Without indigenizing its education, it makes Pakistanis go abroad and never come back. It should allow them to flourish in Pakistan. The Pakistani education system needs to have value in and of itself inside the country. It should not be seen as a pathway out of Pakistan.’ he emphasized.

Moreover, there is a huge British influence on the curriculum or the overall education of Pakistan. ‘Students are studying for British tests and you have to think if that is what the education system should be focused on. All of this money and all of this focus is going to a UK-based test, how does it even make sense.’ Adam examined while cross-questioning the situation.

When asked where does he see the women in the education system of Pakistan, he was more hopeful, excited, and satisfied than anyone in the country itself. He believes that Pakistani women are everywhere in the government. “They have and are serving as the Prime Minister, ambassadors to the UN, in foreign services, leaders in political parties, and the military.” he added.

According to Adam, Pakistani women are quite educated and a part of public life. ‘This is what Pakistan should be proud of but it doesn’t brag about it enough. Pakistan should be talking about it all the time but they don’t’ he expressed.

He concluded the interview commenting on an important problem but with a positive statement, ‘Freedom in Pakistan depends upon where you are and who your relatives are. That could be improved but Pakistan should be proud of what it has achieved thus far.”

Pakistani teenager wins the NYT’s word challenge coining a new term ‘oblivionaire’

A teenager from Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, Rohana Khattak wins the New York Time’s ‘Invent a Word’ challenge by introducing the word ‘oblivionaire’ referring to the global economic leaders.

The new English word is derived from two existing words ‘oblivious’ and ‘billionaire.’ As clear from the name, it means the billionaire who is oblivious of the consequences of the accumulation of their wealth on the poor and middle class.

The 16 years old explained the meaning of the word saying that oblivionaire is a billionaire who chooses to be blind or unaware of the disparity and inequality that their wealth is causing. Rohana sounds touched by social inequality caused by the unequal distribution of wealth. The world is moved by how a teenager used this medium to bring a bitter social reality to notice. Explaining why this word should be a part of English vocabulary, Rohana said,

“According to Oxfam International, the “world’s 10 richest men more than doubled their fortunes” to $1.5 trillion “during the first two years of a pandemic that has seen the incomes of 99 percent of humanity fall and over 160 million more people forced into poverty.” She further asserted, “we live in an era that has multiple global catastrophes taking place at the same time and inequality to the point that, while millions of children are starving to death, others have more money than they can spend. This egregious imbalance is not drawing enough attention, and we need to have the vocabulary to name the people who, in the lap of luxury, detach themselves from responsibility to the millions of people suffering and in agony around the planet.”

Rohana also gave an example using this word in a sentence explaining the cause why she coined this term.

“Gen Z’s furor over the so-called oblivionaires who ignore global crises is blowing up on social media, in a campaign being noticed by many global and political figures.”

The teenage girl received appreciation from all across the country. The Pakistani ambassador to the US, Sardar Masood Khan also tweeted for Rohana congratulating her for winning the competition and inventing the word.

How to get a good score on the GRE?

Graduate Record Examination carries huge importance in your international admissions decision. You can get accepted to the best universities with prestigious scholarships with a good score in your GRE. So, are there any tips to score high in GRE? Yes, there are some tips and tricks that you can use to make a difference in your GRE score. But is there any shortcut to its preparation? No there is not. Give as much time as you think is enough for you to have a grip on it. However, here are some tips on how to get a good score on the GRE.

  • Solve the easier questions first

The first tip is about solving your test. It is always best to solve the easiest questions first. Don’t take it as something that you have to end in one go. Instead, go through the whole test three to four times to solve different types of questions each time. In the first go, answer the questions that you are sure about and are easy. In the second go, answer the questions that need a little more consideration. Third time going through the test, answer the questions that take more time than others. And finally, answer the questions that you have only to guess.

  • Solve questions smartly

You have to be a little smart when solving the questions like sentence equivalence or multiple blanks. They might sound difficult but they can be handled well with a little consideration. For example, the multiple blank questions are very easier than the single blank ones. You get more clues to fill in them. Also, if you can fill in even one blank, you will understand the rest of them by making their sense clear.

Likewise, the sentence equivalence questions can be answered by the elimination technique. You have to choose two options from a list of six. All you have to do is to make sure that they make sense in the sentence and give it the same meaning. You can eliminate as many options as possible by checking them on these criteria and then choose the last ones as your answer.

  • Choose the right and official resource for preparation

Don’t go just for any book just because different academies or online platforms are presenting it as the best one. Try to stick to the official resource. You can get the latest changes and updates from the official website of ETS. You can also use the ETS book for GRE as the authentic and ultimate resource for preparation.

  • Guessing is better than leaving

There is no negative marking for incorrect answers so it is better that you answer every question. When you have solved all other questions, try to make your guesses at the end. Guess does not necessarily have to be random. You can still make the best guess according to your reasons.

  • Identify what you can do the best and what not

When you are practicing GRE, you will realize what parts are your strengths and what you find difficult to solve. For instance, you might find it difficult to solve analytical reason questions and easy to solve quantitative reasoning questions. Once you identify this, you will get what questions to solve first and what at the end. Try to solve as many questions as possible.

  • There are smart tips but no shortcuts

You can ask others for guidance and some tips but there are no shortcuts to its preparation. So, practice as much as possible and prepare every category of the questions. The more exercises you solve the more are the chances that you will score high. Good luck with your endeavors.
