Benefits and Limitations of Homeschooling

Are you worried about your child’s schooling? Don’t worry; We will share the benefits and limitations of homeschooling.

The idea of homeschooling is not new at all, especially when the world faced the pandemic a few years back. The concept of homeschooling can be been growing rapidly since then. Many parents are seen choosing to homeschool their kids rather than sending them off to school. This is because some younger kids are still unable to get their vaccines, so many parents feel uncertain about sending their children back to school.

But is homeschooling a good option for the kids? Is it as beneficial as the kids that go to school? If you are considering homeschooling your kids, you have come to the right page because, in this article, we will discuss all the benefits and limitations of homeschooling.

Read on!

Benefits of Homeschooling

Effective learning

One fantastic benefit of homeschooling is its efficiency and effectiveness. When studying in a classroom of about 30 children, many distractions make the kids lose focus. Whereas, while studying at home, this is not the case. The overall quality of education increases when children learn in a one-on-one environment and when a specific learning style is adopted. The parents can choose various homeschooling styles or approaches, which makes learning super easy and fun for the children.

Who doesn’t like to set up their own schedule? This is probably one of the main reasons that many parents feel comfortable about homeschooling their children. Parents have the choice of the curriculum; there is complete freedom on what to teach or how to teach the kids. The parents even know the strengths and weaknesses of their kids, so if the child is interested in the topics of Space, they can especially add such a topic that would spark the interest of the kid.

Free time

Quite like flexibility, but the parents or even the kids don’t need to follow a particular set of rules as compared to the kids going to school. In this way, school is not only limited to school hours as teachable moments are always happening. The timing can be adjusted to suit your kid’s needs, the sequence of lessons can be easily altered, and they can be taught whenever the parents or the kids are ready.

Stronger relationships

Parents get the opportunity to spend more time with their children, which strengthens their bond and develops a closer bond with deep understanding. Growing up in a family with stronger connections improves mental health and builds up healthy social connections. This helps impart values, coach behavior, and work through conflicts positively.

It helps deal with stereotypes and differences.

Families would learn to accept more muscular girls and sensitive boys; there would be less stigma for kids with learning differences.

Foster, less peer-dependent children would not be exposed to early drugs and bullying, which lowers their confidence level.

Limitations of Homeschooling

Lack of facilities

Your home may not be as well-equipped as the classroom in the school. For example, for Physics or Chemistry experimental lessons, it might get challenging to procure all the necessary materials, chemicals, etc. Many homes also lack physical facilities, like a sports complex, running tracks, and swimming pools.

Missing out on several opportunities

Despite the flexibility at home, there are still many ways that can limit a child’s opportunities. For example, if a child wants to pursue a particular subject, you can’t teach at home; you will have to seek out other alternatives. The same is the case with missing out on social opportunities. Due to a lack of interaction with people, there is a high chance of the kid’s losing confidence and struggling to talk to others.

Lack of social interaction

This is probably one of the most significant disadvantages of homeschooling. Homeschooling can never provide the opportunity of sitting next to a peer and sharing the school experience, having healthy discussions or socializing and going out on school field trips. This limited way of interaction hurts the development of social skills. These kids find it hard to communicate appropriately with different people and are not even exposed to people with different ideologies, beliefs, opinions, and cultures.

Less focus on learning

Homeschooling is more relaxed than going to school because children are taught by their less strict parents instead of teachers. This makes the children relax, lose the will to learn, and be quick to do something else rather than focus on their studies. This happens due to the lack of unbiased monitoring. This in the long run, will hurt the students as they will slowly lose focus and interest, which will not contribute to achieving promising positive results.

Does homeschooling work?

If you closely look at the situation and compare the end results, you will become more aware of the limitations of homeschooling. Homeschooling does have a lot of advantages, but the limitations weigh more. Hence, it is up to you to decide whether homeschooling is better for your child or not.

Good Luck!

Top myths about a Career in Psychology

In this article, we have listed down some of the top myths about a career in Psychology.

When you tell people you study Psychology, their first response is, ‘Can you tell me what I am thinking?’ or ‘Can you read his/her mind?’

If you are a Psychology student, I am sure you will be able to relate to this. There are many misconceptions about the study of Psychology, let alone having a career in this field. The world outside Psychology has always been curious and wondered what clinicians exactly do in this field. Today’s culture has implanted so many wrong notions about Psychology in people’s minds that they have started to believe every misleading myth about a career in the field of Psychology.

They only focus on what is wrong with People

Most of us have been made to believe that psychologists only treat “abnormal” individuals. Well, this is not entirely true. There is a particular branch of psychology which is known as Clinical Psychology, it relates to the study of psychological disorders and abnormal behaviors. However, many people don’t know that Psychology goes way beyond this.

Few job opportunities in psychology

Well, the field of psychology offers several jobs if you think outside the box. Psychology studies human behavior and numerous applications for knowledge like that. Besides, there are a wide variety of jobs in this field, including academic counselor, behavioral technician, life coach, and much more.

Psychologists can fix People

While mental health providers apply various techniques to their client’s mental illnesses or needs, therapists don’t fix their clients. However, these therapists can only act as a guide, life coach, or support system; the client incites the change from the therapy.

All psychologists do the same thing

This is not true at all! All psychologists’ job varies based on their specializations, specific client populations, and areas of interest. Some of these psychologists conduct experiments, while others help children in academic settings, and the list goes on.

Psychologists can read minds

I am sure many of you must have heard this one. This is not true at all. Psychology studies the mind, human nature, human behavior, and how people interact in society. But no psychologist will ever claim that they can read your minds or what is going on in your minds.

Mental illnesses eventually go away

This is the most popular myth related to psychology. Well, it is false. The symptoms might diminish for a short span of time, but they are likely to return when the individual is exposed to any kind of stress, so it is better to get it treated before anything terrible happens. While many people may not take this seriously, mental illnesses can lead to terrible consequences such as violence, suicide, or homelessness if not treated correctly or on time.

Psychologists and psychiatrists do the same thing

Yes, psychologists and psychiatrists both treat patients with mental illnesses, but psychologists mainly work with people in therapy to change thought patterns, build better reactions to stress, and manage their emotions. While on the other hand, psychiatrists mainly treat chemical imbalances in the brains that lead to mental illnesses. Psychiatrists have received a Ph. D and completed an approved internship before receiving their license.

Psychologists only work in the Hospitals

Again, this is false. Psychology is a diverse and broad field that encompasses the study of human thoughts, nature, emotion, personality, behavior, development, and more. Psychologists do work in hospitals, but they also work in prisons, human resource departments, schools, counseling departments, sports, industrial sectors, and the list goes on. Research and teaching are also very common.

Psychology is not Science

It is commonly heard how Psychology is not natural Science. Well, psychology is indeed legitimate science. Researchers within the field carry out multiple experiments to test hypotheses. Psychologists also use qualitative and quantitative research methods such as focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, or surveys to understand behaviors and cognitive processes. Moreover, revolutionary experiments are conducted to see how our brain reacts or functions, how we make friends, and how stress or trauma can affect us.

Reasons why you shouldn’t go to LUMS?

Lahore University of Management and Sciences, also famously known as LUMS, is a renowned university. Numerous students dream of attending this well-known university because of its education and campus life. But the question here arises it worth going to LUMS? Is this institute over-hyped and over-rated by many? Is it worth investing your parent’s hard-earned money into this institute?

We have the answer to all these questions in this article; we will present you with six significant reasons why you shouldn’t go to LUMS. Yes, you read that right because many students want to study in this prestigious university and work hard day and night to achieve their dream, but unfortunately, many kids fail to do so. Don’t worry because there are plenty of other good options.

Extremely overpriced

It is discrimination between the upper class/ elites and the lower middle class. It is the concept of “have or have not.” If you are rich enough to pay the fee, you are good to go, but if you belong to a middle class or lower middle class, it is nearly impossible to pay their students’ unimaginable fees. LUMS is a place known only for the elites or people of the higher class.

Scholarship schemes are a mere scam.

While many people might not know this, it is true. The institute will only grant scholarships to 2 out of 10 people and not more than that. Even if 600 people have applied for financial aid, they won’t approve it

Read more: Fun facts about LUMS

Life at LUMS = Boring

Yes, this comes as a shocking surprise, but it is true. While many students at LUMS boast about the super fun life at the institute, many students at LUMS find campus life boring and lonely. Many claims that everyone pretends to be someone they are not, and many students are in a constant state of existential crisis.

Low quality of education

LUMS was once known for its top-notch quality of education, but now the times have changed.

It was a place of learning where the students who couldn’t get into international universities were welcomed with the same level of education. Going to the Institute of Business Administration Karachi rather than LUMS is better because you will receive a better education for half the fee and a better environment. There is no academic excellence and no caring for the students at LUMS.

The terrible hierarchy system

There is a horrible hierarchy system in this institute that many students hate.

Dean’s honor list is at the top of this hierarchy system; the students included in this list are treated much differently than the other students. The university’s authority only recognizes them as students who are a part of the honor list. This honor list is corrupted by students whose only reason for being there is to get along with the teacher assistants or the professors; they celebrate birthdays with them, sit in their offices for hours, and talk about everything except their studies.

The hierarchy systems also continue with the campus’ musicians or athletes the others accept as the most popular ones. These people rule out the societies and make sure no one from the average crowd gets a chance to be in these societies or their groups.

The rapid change in the culture

LUMS is not what it used to be in those initial years. Many students studying there feel how the culture is rapidly changing. The students feel that there are not many facilities compared to other universities. Many think that LUMS has turned into a small town where inexperienced people are running, and it has lost its actual culture

What is the difference between PMS and PCS?

While PMS stands for Provincial Management Services and PCS stands for Provincial Civil Service, there is not much difference because PCS services have been merged into PMS services. Just like PMS officers, PCS officers are appointed through a competitive exam by the Public Service Commission. Those that secure higher merit opts as PCS-Executives, and the rest join Secretariat Services.

PMS exam criteria and the age limit?

The PMS exam combines written tests of 1200 marks and an interview of 200 marks. The criteria are like:

  • Candidates must take compulsory and optional subjects from the PMS syllabus defined by the PPSC.
  • Negative marking is also conducted. 0.25 for every wrong answer in the objective paper, MCQs of general knowledge.
  • Non-Muslim candidates can take Islamic Studies or Ethics, which is a combination of both subjective and objective.

As for the age limit, according to the latest PPSC advertisement number 12, the age relaxation would be from 21 years to 30 years. Whereas a maximum of 10 years of relaxation in the upper age limit shall be allowed for a special person.

Can I do PMS after completing BA?

How to apply for PMS exams?

The PPSC has announced at least 50 jobs; the advertisement is available on their official website for those who wish to apply for these exams. These exams are held at Multan, Lahore, Rawalpindi, D.G. Khan, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, and Faisalabad. For more details, you can check the official website of the PPSC.

Is PMS easier than CSS?

Many people think that PMS is easier than CSS. While both are the most prestigious and offer promising careers for the youth of Pakistan. The fact remains that CSS exams are held every year, and the CSS officers get a quick promotion; on the other hand, PMS exams are conducted randomly, and the promotion level is a bit slower. Hence, CSS is a lot tougher than PMS.
