Bridging the Gap through Industry Academia Linkages: A letter to the editor

The debate about bridging the gap between academia & industry is never ending and universities are full of people who are taking initiative to tackle the situation and cement a road that can do the trick. Academicians have developed the departments that are solely responsible to equip the final-year students & freshers to achieve what it takes to hit the ground running in an industrial set-up.

Not to upset the academicians, I believe that if there is a separate department to polish the skills and school the students to acquire the professional traits, it will only compel the students to unlearn the taught skills and learn the new ones in a very narrow window of time.

The trick is to teach the students what theories and norms are there in the books and how they impact real-life situations. Rather than stuffing the grey matter of the students with bookish knowledge, the practicality and productivity of each aspect, theory, notion, norm and statement should be taught.

I can see the gap more obviously because I have been lucky to teach by teachers who became academicians after working in the industry for several years. My thought process was moulded accordingly by teachers from SIEMENS, TOYOTA, AstraZeneca etc. and instead of being taught the theory, I was given the problems and told to sort them out with the help of books and their intuition.

The DNA of the whole pedigree can be related to the example that if you taught someone “French” language in a classroom, the language will be of limited use to him/her. But rather than that, if someone is taught French by speaking it with native speakers, watching movies or dialogues and put in more of a real-life situation, then s / he will be able to use that more practically and diligently and it would benefit the person more. That learning methodology will teach the French that is more used at a street level and talked about more in media.

Similarly, let’s talk about MS Excel. You can teach so many tools, techniques, hacks & formulas in a classroom setting. Contrary to that, if a problem is given to the students in an Excel course and the students are asked to come up with a solution either by reading a book i.e., Excel for Dummies or by watching a YouTube video, the students will remember that thing more and even see the actual practicality.

Keeping that perspective in mind, the learning and teaching approach used by most of the universities in Pakistan needs to be revised and revisited and the teaching pedagogy should be changed altogether. That would create a workforce of fresh graduates who are more aligned with the demands of the industry and they’ll fit better and quicker into the organizations.

The politics of medium of instruction in schools: a perspective

The last weekend had been a rich experience for me as the country celebrated its mother languages week. During my engagement with many linguist scholars and language rights advocates, I was amazed by the diversity of powerful viewpoints the idea carried. It provided me with an opportunity to start looking into the matter more systematically as it does affect both the teacher and his/her students in their learning environments. A major barrier to education, and perhaps a primary source of our learning barriers, is caused by keeping a child away from his/her mother language. Language has a direct link with a child’s cognition. And that cognition cannot be developed without a child getting internally acclimatized to his/her surroundings. There are many beautiful initiatives undertaken by our own local educators (heroes) who have internalized systems of learning that helped children have fun with learning solely because of the comfort and acceptance they have found in such environments. But all such extraordinary steps get wiped away when the state imposes its diction on uniform learning systems; and we can’t get out of our binary of English and Urdu medium of instruction and learning in public schools. That’s one viewpoint on language rights, strongly adhere to.

The other viewpoint is more nationalistic which stems from the resentment of communities that feel that their fundamental cultural identity is being robbed of them by the hegemony of Urdu, which is the sole official language of Pakistan. During discussions, a debate arose about whether or not Urdu should be considered a lingua franca, a common language among different communities, but the idea was opposed by other language proponents on the ground that Urdu might actually become an obstacle itself between two language communities because consequently, each group will fail to make an effort to understand each other’s way of talking. The idea was further supported by the perception that people can begin to understand each other through mere words and simple actions, and this will enable them to familiarise themselves with how they communicate and learn with each other in their own language. This way, they become more immersed with each other, however, if there is another language to be used between them, their direct interaction runs the risk of becoming restrictive and alienated.

This is a very persuasive viewpoint on language nationalism, but I found many other questions unfold: what happens in the context of technological advancements in a heavily globalized world where vocabulary and languages are shifting from their conventional paradigms and moving towards more universal languages? It is a civilizational evolution that is bound to occur as no language could remain static or in silos for a long time. In times of high-paced technology and scientific advancements, commonalities are crucial for sharing of information and knowledge. That is where I tend to disagree with the nationalist political perspective of keeping languages “pure”. I do, however, believe that languages need to be preserved because they carry with them important history and lessons that we can learn from. But keeping it from evolving and absorbing changes as communities interact will only make it irrelevant and redundant ultimately.

The third viewpoint is legislative hegemony of language; whereas article 28, the fundamental right to preserve language, script and culture, but that is subject to article 251 which stipulates Urdu as an official language. Many attempts had been made to amend the said article so it could accommodate the required official status of other spoken languages as well, but it could not get through on technical hindrances. The promotion of local languages was legislated in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well, but they are nowhere near implementation as they become subject to bureacratic obstacles. This is the reason why all 77 local languages are perishing, out of which 28 are in extreme danger of extinction. This should be a major concern for the state, as the loss of a language here means a loss of heritage. Although it’s hard to revive a dying language, preserving a language for the sake of saving knowledge and wisdom it carried through the ages becomes more than a national responsibility.

ILM AMAL ZINDAGI, A book that will heal you!

Millions of books are available in the market dealing with this subject, most of which are sold out on a commercial basis. Furthermore, the authors who write such money-making books have no real knowledge and no prior experience concerning the subject. They lack the acute observational skills that are necessary before opting for this serious job. In other words, they don’t do justice to the subject. But, in علم، عمل، زندگی (ilm, amal, zindagi) you will find a hundred percent authentic knowledge, depth of experience, and implication of inclusiveness that prevail along with brevity.

Prof Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad Shaheed, who is the author of this book, needs no introduction. He was a pioneering intellectual, a scholar of philosophy, strategic management, teacher, entrepreneur, author, writer, researcher, influencer, policymaker, and social reformer who inspired people and communities around the world. As an erudite teacher, his scholarship and affection have left an indelible mark on thousands of his students globally.

Having spent his whole life reading, writing, teaching, and doing research, Prof Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad Shaheed founded one of the best universities in Pakistan i.e., University of Management and Technology, Lahore. This book is a distillation of Dr Hasan’s life experiences and observations. While you’ll read it, you would feel that he had his hand on the pulse of human psychology. God had gifted Dr. Sahib with a pure heart, a contemplative mind, and eloquence in both speech and writing. His family, pupils, co-workers, colleagues, and acquaintances would witness that he was a practising man and that his words and actions never contradicted each other.

“Ilm, Amal, Zindagi” has been written from the heart of a man who believed in the dissemination of knowledge whose reference can be corrborated and perhaps it is the reason why each word of this book appeals aesthetically, emotionally, logical and critically sense of humankind. For heartfelt ideas such as those presented in this book, Allama Iqbal said:

دل سے جو بات نکلتی ہے اثر رکھتی ہے
پر نہیں، طاقت پرواز مگر رکھتی ہے

The book will touch your heart and soul.

As of content of the book, they deal with a variety of topics and themes such as leadership, mental health, education, time management, role modelling, human relations, quality of life, reformation system, personality development, global citizenship in the twenty-first century, change management, personality development, organization, accountability, effective communication, spirituality, networking, team building, work management and time management, etc. To cut the long story short, many novel concepts and unique things have been expressed in the book that is linked to the rising concerns of the 21st century.

Though this isn’t a psychology book, it throws light on many ideas related to human psychology.

As we know imbalances in our minds can give rise to such conditions as depression, anxiety, addiction and other mental health issues, all of these things can stand in the way of our success and performance and cause unhappiness in our lives. Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad Shaheed writes that when our heart is troubled, we start making wrong decisions. Obviously, wrong decisions infuriate the entire circle of our lives. What is the diet of the heart and how can you revive it and protect it from falling prey to stress and anxiety so that it works with positive energy? How to stay away from other mental health problems?

While stress is an inevitable part of life, it has been especially more intense these days. Hasan Murad Shaheed too is of the view that work pressure can affect our personalities. He writes when our mind is muddled, the ability to hear and see does not work properly. He says excessive or persistent stress can be detrimental to our health, relationships, self-esteem, and quality of life. Talking about how to deal with stress, he hints at several ways, some of which are:

Do not forget to smile every day.

Light leisure should be used to refresh the mind.

Eat a nutritious diet and avoid filling your life with excessive luxury.

Make a new beginning each morning.

Take a look at tomorrow instead of yesterday.

Make plans so that you can enjoy nature’s spectacular sights.

Do not pollute your home life with outside problems.

You should go to bed early and get up early.

Make morning walks a routine.

Think about reading good novels.

Make prayer a habit because it soothes the soul, cools the eyes, and is the believer’s weapon.

In the book, you will learn how you can thrive as a leader, what is your fundamental job, why it’s sometimes necessary to be calm and composed, why wisdom is a must-have attribute in a leader, how a leader acts in crisis, what is the role of advisors in the success of a leader, what is the legacy of true leadership, what is Islamic model of leadership, how noble human values such as humility and gratitude are must-found attributes in a leader, so forth and so on. Here are a few lines of what the book says about a leader:

A leader brings the distant future closer to the present.

Great people are characterized by more work, harder work, better work and continuous work.

A leader brings the distant future closer to the present.

A leader listens and acts from the heart.

A leader both hears and sees with their heart.

A leader inquires from the heart and responds from the heart.

A leader gives and receives from the heart.

A leader rules the heart.

The book breaks down all the fundamentals of creating outstanding teams. Forming a group and giving them a task is not enough to establish a team. Valuable characteristics, preparation, and careful analysis are part and parcel of effective team management.

The author offers thoughts such as “No single person can do great work”, “goal is more essential than the job” and ” even a collection of scattered individuals are not able to do constructive work” as he explains why teamwork and team management are vital and what managers can do to get the most out of teams. The best way to get people to do good according to the author is to set a personal example.

The book tells us that time management is critically important for today’s leaders. “Your time is only for you”, but often we don’t feel so. The writer advises not to leave any task unfinished otherwise to avoid more use of time and resources.

Do you enjoy your career? According to the writer of this book, people who like their jobs are often more cheerful, driven, focused, inspired, and ambitious.

“Make your job your hobby and your hobby as your job”, recommends the writer.

The writer of “Ilm, Amal, Zindagi” says that our quality of life may be improved by having the ability to communicate our ideas well.

If you’re looking for guidance on how to improve relations between you and you, between you and your family, between you and your office colleagues, between you and your community, between you and your team, etc, then this is a must-read book for you.

The book also deals with the subject of globalization. According to the author, the world is getting smaller and a global citizen is emerging as the man of the twenty-first century. Put aside their differences, the nations of the world are developing positive relationships with one another.

You’ll find inspirational quotes scattered throughout the book. One cannot help but applaud the author of these insightful and precise statements since they are so strong, effective, and poignant. These quotations are all so potent that they have the capacity to change your life.

While educators may use this book in their Life and Learning course, trainers could include it in their training module. Whether you are a psychologist in practice or a university professor, this book will enhance your understanding from many perspectives. This book is a must-read for you even if you are a management genius because it contains many original concepts. If you have a leadership position in any industry, you should read this book since it deals with the topic of leadership most frequently.

Until now, you’ve read “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, which is a simple set of rules for a more successful life. But, “Ilm, Amal, Zindagi” is a more fascinating read and more engrossing book that would change your perspective on life.

If you’re a leader, manager, teacher, trainer, mentor, and psychologist, you must have this book in your personal library.

To sum up, the ideas expressed in the book will help you take control of your life, be happy, be healthy, be positive, be punctual, be a role model, make better choices, manage personal contacts, avoid stress, combat negative habits, enhance efficiency, and much more. The underlying message of the book is that without seeking guidance from God, you cannot feel the difference whether the path you’ve taken in your personal, as well as professional life, is right or wrong and how you see the world and how the world sees you.

So, what are you waiting for? Stop whatever you’re doing right now and go buy a copy of this book if you haven’t already. Your life will be transformed by it. “Ilm, Amal, Zindagi”, is a book for all those who are in search of true wisdom, inspiration and want to heal themselves.

Where are the schools taking us? A letter to the editor

Where are the schools taking us? A letter to the editor

A friend of mine; who is a 4th grade class teacher at one of Lahore’s top private school, quoted: A student refused to pick up his stuff from the floor saying, I cannot pick it up.  Ayaa gi will pick it up.

Today, all the eligibility and acceptability criteria have been narrowed down to only one criteria i.e how fluently and confidently your child can communicate in English. This increased inclination towards speaking English has now led us to a social setting where a child who cannot communicate in English will not being warmly welcomed, appreciated and might not be considered good enough.

The children being nurtured in these big private schools are far away from seeing the broader aspect of the society and they might end up never knowing how to communicate with the kids/individuals coming from a different background or status than theirs.

I do understand that these are high expectations from a child who is only a child at the end of the day. On the other hand, I have also observed and understood the belief that it all starts from home but can we just take into consideration that this might have started happening unknowingly in your household as well?

Related: Top best private schools in Pakistan

Primarily if we are to compare the ability, attitude towards elders, basic values and empathy between the children coming from top private schools and children coming from street smart schools; the results might shock us all.

Let’s not forget that the teachers play a less part in the problem as they are just employees whose hands are tied and are only allowed less or no space to teach freely. A child of 8 or 9 years of age would know exactly know or is being told how to treat the teachers, Ayaa gis, and his class mates. This new benchmark has primarily been introduced by the top private schools and has widely been accepted by the young parents.

We, as responsible individuals have failed to understand that if we will be discouraging the use of own language at this tender age, our children will become the individuals who will discouraging the very own way in which they were being raised.

Extremely overpriced

It is discrimination between the upper class/ elites and the lower middle class. It is the concept of “have or have not.” If you are rich enough to pay the fee, you are good to go, but if you belong to a middle class or lower middle class, it is nearly impossible to pay their students’ unimaginable fees. LUMS is a place known only for the elites or people of the higher class.

Scholarship schemes are a mere scam.

While many people might not know this, it is true. The institute will only grant scholarships to 2 out of 10 people and not more than that. Even if 600 people have applied for financial aid, they won’t approve it

Life at LUMS = Boring

Yes, this comes as a shocking surprise, but it is true. While many students at LUMS boast about the super fun life at the institute, many students at LUMS find campus life boring and lonely. Many claims that everyone pretends to be someone they are not, and many students are in a constant state of existential crisis.

Low quality of education

LUMS was once known for its top-notch quality of education, but now the times have changed.

It was a place of learning where the students who couldn’t get into international universities were welcomed with the same level of education. Going to the Institute of Business Administration Karachi rather than LUMS is better because you will receive a better education for half the fee and a better environment. There is no academic excellence and no caring for the students at LUMS.

The terrible hierarchy system

There is a horrible hierarchy system in this institute that many students hate.

Dean’s honor list is at the top of this hierarchy system; the students included in this list are treated much differently than the other students. The university’s authority only recognizes them as students who are a part of the honor list. This honor list is corrupted by students whose only reason for being there is to get along with the teacher assistants or the professors; they celebrate birthdays with them, sit in their offices for hours, and talk about everything except their studies.

The hierarchy systems also continue with the campus’ musicians or athletes the others accept as the most popular ones. These people rule out the societies and make sure no one from the average crowd gets a chance to be in these societies or their groups.

The rapid change in the culture

LUMS is not what it used to be in those initial years. Many students studying there feel how the culture is rapidly changing. The students feel that there are not many facilities compared to other universities. Many think that LUMS has turned into a small town where inexperienced people are running, and it has lost its actual culture
