UET Conference on “Sustainable Water Resources Management”

Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore organized a one-day 2nd Conference on “Sustainable Water Resources Management” (SWRM-22).

The conference was attended by participants from different institutions and organizations in Pakistan. Prof Dr Noor Muhammad Khan, Director of CEWRE inaugurated the conference and highlighted the main themes.

During his opening speech the chief guest Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar Vice-Chancellor UET Lahore, indicated the need to put a spotlight on the invisible resource-the groundwater, enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration and thereby increase the awareness of the importance of taking care of our water resources and come up with agenda for future research and action.

In his address as a keynote speaker, Prof Dr Habib Ur Rehman, Dean of Civil Engineering, UET, Lahore highlighted the importance of sustainable aquifer management through recharging techniques. Engr Shahid Hameed, Advisor to WAPDA highlighted the role of WAPDA in efficient water resources development of Pakistan and future plans for Hydropower and water conservation projects.

Prof Dr Hamza Farooq Gabriel from NUST, Islamabad discussed the use of Sustainable Eco-technologies for Wastewater Treatment. Ahmed Kamal, Chairman Federal Flood Commission (FFC), Pakistan, Usman e Ghani, Additional commissioner for Indus waters, Pakistan, Engr Fazal Rahman Kashif, Chief Engineer, NESPAK, and Dr Naveed Ahmad Deputy Director Hydrology, Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) also expressed their views regarding efficient Sustainable Water Resources Management, especially in an urban area and transboundary basins.

In three technical sessions, eighteen technical papers were also presented with the main focus on climate change impact assessment, extreme events, hydraulic analysis, and water management. The participation was from various national organizations/institutes including the Centre for integrated mountains research, the University of Punjab (PU), Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi (UAAR), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), and UET Taxila apart from the Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering.

In the concluding session, Prof Dr Noor Muhammad Khan, Director, Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering appreciated the organizing team of the conference especially Dr Kaleem Sarwar, Dr Muhammad Waseem, Engr Faraz ul Haq and Engr Muhammad Awais Zafar and resolved that CEWRE will continue its struggle to train water managers and researchers in the field of water resources.
