NUML Accepts Students’ Demand for Online Exams

ISLAMABAD: The National University of Modern Languages (NUML), after much deliberation and students’ protest that lasted for a few days, has now accepted the demands to conduct the exams online.

The Examination Branch of NUML has issued a notification that mentioned, “In pursuance of the government instructions and HEC guidelines regarding the opening of universities from February 01, 2021, it is here notified that end-term exams of Fall 2020 semester will be conducted in two stages: Stage1 will be online exam of 30 marks and in Stage 2, viva of 20 marks.”

It has been notified that PhD, M.Phil, MS, Languages (Functional Courses) and lab related exams will be held on campus.

The notification reads, “Students facing connectivity issues at home will be facilitated to use IT facilities at NUML campuses.”

NUML university students expressed their satisfaction on twitter over the decision made by the varsity.

Different rounds of talks were held between the protesters and university administration over the last week. A large number of protesting students staged their protest for the online exams and raised their concerns on conducting the on-campus papers.

The protesting students argued that if they attended online classes throughout the semester then exams must be held online.

The decision was taken after the Higher Education Commission advised universities to conduct exams on capacity & need for fair assessment. The HEC took notice of the concerns raised by students of some universities that their examinations should be conducted online.

The apprehensions of students were reviewed carefully in consultation with the Vice Chancellors of all the provinces and regions, keeping in view the difficulties brought about by the pandemic and opening of universities from February 01, 2021.
