SMIU holds a discussion on Role of Inclusive Society

The sustainable development of Pakistan would not be built without the inclusion of women, minorities and marginalized sections of society. This was said by the speakers in a panel discussion on the theme, Role of Inclusive Society in Sustainable Development of Pakistan on Tuesday. The discussion was organized by the Department of Social and Development Studies of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) at Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium.

Dr Shireen Narejo, Secretary Social Welfare Department, Government of Sindh said that Poverty is a macro-economic issue that can be dealt with by initiating economic programs at the grassroots level. Our society is divided into a number of sections, some are in ethnicity, and religion and others are divided in differences. We must respect diversity, she stressed and added further that the youth generation to motivate themselves and they have the potential to change society by contributing to play their role positively.

Renowned environmentalist Nasir Panhwar said recent climate change destruction wasn’t caused by natural disasters but it was human negligence. Agricultural land and natural roots of the water flow are being converted into housing schemes hence natural resources are used in CNG stations from that direction our priorities could be experienced. These all actions lead us to tragic climate disasters.

Senior journalists and Director CEJ – IBA Karachi, Ms Amber Rahim Shamsi said the media has changed its priorities, we only blame on media persons, and anchors that they are showing irrelevant content but it is a reflection of society which they are shown to us. They are showing what audiences like to watch.

Dr Zahid Ali Channar, Dean Social Sciences among panelists said we are not producing human capital because we spend less on education. Of the total whole population, only 60% are educated, while from that total figure, only 15% reached the university level. Out of which 15% the number of women is very less.

Prof Dr Mujeeb Sahrai Vice-Chancellor SMIU said that Pakistan has big energy of youth, for whom there is a dire need to create employment opportunities. We were also very slow in achieving those goals. Women are very vulnerable in getting an education. Most women become households after completing their education so as a result that talent is wasted. The session was moderated by Dr Subhash, Chairperson of the department.

The event was attended by students, principal officers and faculty members. In the end, Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai distributed shields among the guests.
