At an introductory outreach at Nazeer Hussain University (NHU), Dr Mohid Iftikhar, Director of Research at the Center for International Strategic Studies Sindh (CISSS) explained that global thinking has reexamined to invest in new nuclear power projects, mainly because of geopolitical conflicts, climate change threats, which result in power supply issues and financial problems such as price instability.
In the context of Pakistan, there is an immediate need to address the energy shortfall and as well as revitalize the agricultural economy. In relation, he stressed that nuclear technology in Pakistan has played a vital role and now CISSS seeks to research and inform the public about its broad socio-economic impacts. An important contribution in the field of energy is that nuclear share in power generation has increased from 1% in the 1990s to approximately 12% at present. Whereas, in the field of nuclear agriculture, Pakistani scientists are working towards innovation for high-quality and affordable crops. CISSS Researchers Farzana Wahid Buksh, Sumair Ayoob and Muhammad Usama Khan emphasized that nuclear energy is clean and results in zero GHGs.
Dr Mohid Iftikhar noted that as both NHU and CISSS have multidisciplinary academic and research approaches, they can collaborate in areas of climate change, sustainable development and energy security. In conclusion of their presentation, Dr Mohid Iftikhar, Farzana Wahid Buksh, Sumair Ayoob and Muhammad Usama Khan stated that they are enthusiastic about working together with NHU Faculty and Students for national development.
Chancellor Nazeer Hussain University, Engr. Farhat M. Khan commended the role of CISSS in nation-building and underscored that we all must work together. Mr Chancellor noted it was important to educate our youth and indeed this was the broader objective of NHU. In relation, Engr. Farhat M. Khan explained that NHU facilitates students in the best ways possible. He expressed interest in joint research projects and collaboration that would collectively achieve national objectives and allow students to explore opportunities in Pakistan.
Vice-chancellor NHU, Engr, Prof. Bilal A. Alvi showed interest in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CISSS to work together on organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences of mutual benefits. He observed that water security and sustainable goals need considerable attention. Registrar NHU, Afzal Ahmed acknowledged the broader objectives of CISSS and noted that NHU would facilitate joint academic endeavors. NHU Deputy Director ORIC Sabheen Ghori, explained that implementation of policy recommendations is central to progress.
