Art Attack? NCA Students Stage Protest Against Administration

Normally a colourful setting for exchange of creative ideas, the campus of National College of Arts (NCA) turned into a protest yard on Thursday as dozens of students staged a protest against the administration, particularly the registrar, over the alleged expulsion of fellow students.

The protest inside the NCA premises continued for a couple of hours, during which the college administration sealed the premises and did not allow anyone to step inside or outside the college boundaries.

The main grievance of the protesters against the administration was that the registrar had allegedly made it a habit to threaten students and making telephonic complaints to their parents over petty issues. A student that was part of the protest said, “The registrar has crossed all limits by expelling students.” She added that the students were protesting for their rights and they demanded that the registrar be removed.

Though he was not part of the protest, another NCA student said the protesters alleged that the registrar had violated rules and had expelled students on her own and also made irrelevant calls to families of students.

However when contacted, NCA principal Murtaza Jaffri said there was no such issue and the matter in actuality related to payment of fees and some students failure to make the payments.

NCA is the top-ranked arts institution in the country has produced a number of graduates who have gone on to become locally and internationally known professionals. Some notable people that have remained associated with the institute include Zahoorul Akhlaq, Nayyar Ali Dada, Nayyar Noor, Saleema Hashmi and Ali Zafar.
