Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences JSMU launches herbal project display

Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences-Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) launched a project display for herbal products aimed at infusing the benefits of ancient medicine with modern methods. The project display was organized by the third-year Pharmacy students at the Pharmacognosy lab.

Vice-Chancellor JSMU Professor Amjad Siraj Memon appreciated the entrepreneurial efforts of Pharmacy students and said that herbal medicine can prove as a game-changer for healthcare in Pakistan when backed by evidence, sustainability, and innovation.
Principal IPS-JSMU Professor Huma Ali informed the Office of Communications that the students of Pharmacy presented sixteen herbal projects, based on herbal orientation toward therapeutic, cosmeceutical, and nutraceuticals. She further added that the pharmaceutical industry has been widely researching the important compounds of traditional medicines and medicinal plants.

Vice Principal and Head of Pharmacognosy Department Professor Dr Huma Shareef — who has recently returned from the United Kingdom after completing a post-doctoral program —imparted her knowledge and experience in the field of pharmacy to students and conducted the herbal project display, along with Assistant Professor and Course In-charge Sumaira Ishaque and Lecturer Kaneez Fatima.

Group two secured the first position out of sixteen groups for their herbal product, Rapid Relief Castor for Leaf Paste and Patches. Group eleven secured the second position for formulating Aromatherapy for stress relief and organic toothpaste, while the fourth group won the third position for their Neem balm for Eczema and Aloe vera for Sunburn. Other groups won special prizes for their herbal products. The project received a lot of appreciation and acknowledgment from the entire faculty and staff of JSMU.
