Four-Member PHEC Committee To Inspect Sub-Campuses Declared Illegal

The Punjab Higher Education Commission has formed a high-powered committee to take up the case of illegal sub-campuses of private universities spread across the province.

The four-member committee will be visiting and inspecting the 23 sub-campuses of private universities in Punjab that were recently declared illegal. The committee will then submit an evaluation report in the next 30 days.

The decision was made in a meeting of the Accreditation Committee of the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) on Wednesday.

The meeting was held at Arfa Kareem Tower at PHEC Office and continued until late on Wednesday. In attendance were Punjab Higher Education Department Secretary Sajid Zafar Dall, PHEC Chairperson Prof Dr Fazal Ahmed Khalid, representatives of the private varsities and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC).

The participants of the meeting discussed the matter of declaring 23 sub-campuses of private universities of Punjab illegal and the subsequent orders by the Punjab Higher Education Department to immediately stop fresh intake of student at these unauthorized campuses.

Earlier in the week, HED had declared 23 sub-campuses of seven private major sector universities illegal and declared that these campuses had been operating without Punjab Governor’s approval. The HED had vowed legal action against the universities operating campuses illegally.

The HED secretary had earlier also clarified that only new admissions in these sub-campuses had been stopped and students already enrolled in various programs would not be affected. The secretary had said that the already enrolled students had nothing to worry about and they should not worry about any rumors for they were fully protected.
