While many people might not enjoy reading books, reading is still an important skill to have and learning to read at an early age can be fruitful later in life. Teaching your children to learn to read from an early age will only help them advance through many different aspects of life and will prepare them for a better future in the academic field. There is an undeniable fact how reading positively affects our life, a child’s reading skills play an important role in their success at work, school and life in general. In this article, we have listed a few benefits as to why developing reading skills from a young age is important.

1. Preparing for academic success

Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading at an early age are more likely to perform well in studies. The early experience in learning to read allows a child’s vocabulary to grow with exposure to new words and they also develop listening skills from someone else reading to them. The stronger their language skills are, the more they get prepared to read and understand when they join school.

2. Improved language skills

Reading to the children at an early age will help in communication skills, literacy skills and language acquisition. The reason behind this is because reading to children at an early age stimulates the brain to help them understand the meaning of language and helps in building social skills, literacy as well as key language. Moreover, it helps the child in understanding the language of books which is different from the language we hear in daily life.

3. Improved creativity and imagination

Reading to your kids helps them use their imaginations, explore events, people, and places beyond their own experiences. Reading allows imaginative doors to be opened to all kinds of new worlds for your child, this not only widens their imaginative mind, but it makes them dream bigger and act in a more creative way which can be beneficial for them later.

4. Reduced screen time

In today’s world, where everything is about gadgets and technology, children have been addicted to screen time which has a bad effect on their brain development. This is becoming concerning and kids have adopted an unhealthy habit of spending hours on the screen. Whereas, if the kids are introduced to reading books, these books inspire children to learn, explore the world around them and a healthy exercise for their brain development.

5. Sparks curiosity

Children are always curious about learning new stuff, only a curious mind attempts to learn. Books on different topics such as Nature, Science, Math and English can inspire children to explore things around them and encourage them to learn more. A variety of topics sparks curiosity in their minds which will only motivate them to read more and learn about stuff that will also broaden their knowledge on numerous things.

6. Develops concentration

Children have a short span of attention, and they don’t sit still for a long period. But introducing them to regular reading will not only improve their concentration skills but will also increase discipline among them. As they sit still and listen for long periods, it will also build patience which will be beneficial when they start going to school.

7. Bonding between parent and child

When it comes to children, one of the most important things a parent can do is to spend time with them, which has a positive influence on their development. Reading to your children provides an amazing opportunity to have a shared event together where you can spend more time together. Reading time will not only help build up a bond, but it also gives your children a sense of intimacy and well-being. The feeling of intimacy helps your child feel close to you which will give them a sense of trust. Not only is this reading ritual enjoyable but it also plays a positive impact on a child’s mind.
