Attitudes Towards Arts Education Needs Changing: GCU VC

There is an urgent need to change society’s attitude towards arts education, Government College University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Asghar Zaidi said on Wednesday.

His comments came at a signing ceremony wherein a memorandum of understating was agreed to between Government College University Lahore and Lahore Arts Council for promotion and encouragement of artistic and cultural endeavors among youth.

Vice Chancellor Dr Asghar Zaidi and Lahore Arts Council Executive Director Ather Ali Khan signed the accord at a ceremony organized by GCU Directorate of Academic Planning and External Links (AP&EL) at the University’s Meeting Rooms.

Muneeza Hashmi, chairperson of LAC Board of Governors, was the Guest of Honor at the ceremony. Others present at the event included GCU faculty, deans Professor Sultan Shah, Professor Riaz Ahmad and Professor Khalid Manzoor Butt, Distinguished National Professor Dr Ikram-ul-Haq, Registrar Saboor Ahmad Khan and senior officials of GCU.

Dr Zaidi called for changing the society’s attitude towards arts education, adding that both GCU and LAC had agreed to pool in their resources and holding conferences, seminars, talks and workshops on artistic, literary, cultural and intellectual themes, so that a debate could be initiated in this regard.

According to the 27 point accord, GCU would also impart IT, HR and other financial management training to employees of LAC.

LAC Executive Director Ather Ali Khan said GCU was one of the most prestigious educational institutions of Pakistan that had always pursed, nurtured and celebrated excellence, not only in research and education, but also in arts and culture. He said all halls and resources of Alhamara would be available to GCU students after signing of this MoU for all kinds of cultural activities.

Muneeza Hashmi said the accord would give GCU students an opportunity to showcase their talent to a wider audience at Alhamra. She explained the delegation about the scope of the accord.
