Anti-Corruption Establishment conducts enquiry to probe illegal appointments at DUET

The Anti-Corruption Establishment Sindh has initiated an inquiry against the administration and employees of the Dawood University of Engineering and Technology to probe into the alleged illegal appointments and irregularities in the budget.

According to the available information, the Anti-Corruption Establishment Deputy Director of East Zone Karachi has written a letter to the DUET Registrar Prof Dr Syed Ali Shah seeking details of the Vice Chancellor and others. The Enquiry Officer Abdul Ghani in a letter has written that he has been tasked to conduct an inquiry against the DUET VC and other employees. The investigation would be conducted about the illegal appointment and irregularities in Dawood University of Engineering of Technology.

Ghani requested the DUET Registrar to direct the officers and employees involved in alleged illegal appointments to attend the investigation on Friday in the Deputy Director Anti-Corruption Establishment East Zone III Karachi for recording their statements.

The summoned officers and employees are included Engineer Sajid Hussain Siyal, Engineer Darya Khan Kakepoto, Assistant Professor Dr Mujtaba, Geologist Tehmina Fatima Siddiqui, Lab Engineer Tariq Ali Chandio and Assistant Director Adeel Naich.

On the other hand, sources told that a confidential report regarding illegal appointments in Dawood University of Engineering and Technology was sent to Anti-Corruption in which it was revealed that Asif Ali Shah was appointed in the university without any advertisement. Shah had been working as a regular lecturer since 2008 without getting approval from the varsity Syndicate.

Likewise, the summand officer Sajid Hussain Siyal, Fida Khoso, Darya Khan, and others have also been appointed without an advertisement and selection board. Also, some persons have been appointed as engineers but they don’t have accreditation numbers recognized by Pakistan Engineering Council. The appointment of Assistant Professor Dr. Ghulam Mujtaba in the Energy Department is also illegal. The appointment of Tehmina Fatima Siddiqui has been made without any advertisement.

Responding to the inquiry officer, DUET Registrar Prof Dr Syed Ali Shah in a written reply has said; “it is informed that Geologist Tehmina Fatima Siddiqui and Lab Engineer Tariq Ali Chandio are on study leave to pursue their higher education. However, the remaining employees are preoccupied in conducting classes and other educational activities at the campus”.

“As you know that due to Covid-19, recently educational activities have been commenced after a long period of suspension, hence, it is requested to kindly visit yourself or depute your team at Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, as per provision of your department for recording statements of the employees of University”.
